In today’s world, it’s easy to feel helpless. Replaceable at your job, unappreciated in your relationships, trapped by bills and ills and the suffocating lull of daily life. Coupled with a constant stream of perfectionistic ideals on social media, we can feel inadequate, unimportant, and above all, powerless.
Thankfully, we can chose to empower ourselves. Regardless of our surroundings, it’s our choice to make peace with them. When we do – when we accept our lives and ourselves as they are – we relinquish the hold they have on us. Just like forgiveness frees of from bearing burdens of hate and grudge, accepting our lives exactly as they are frees the hold inadequacy can take.
Making peace with our situations doesn’t mean we’re giving up; in fact, it means the opposite. When we accept things we, metaphorically, put them down on the table, and have the energy and strength to strive for better.
We’re only stuck if we truly want to be; things are only as shitty as we allow them to stay. Whether it’s an abusive partner, berating coworker or family member, or troubled financial waters, acceptance can be the life raft that decides if we sink or swim. Instead of finding misery outside ourselves, we can cultivate a little peace within.
